The name Callwen comes from the daughter of the fifth-century king of south Wales, Brychan. She was one of many of his Welsh daughters. The same daughter went on to become Saint Callwen. There are no other references to the name Callwen. The ending of the name -wen means fair in Welsh.

Saint Callwen embraced a life of serving her fellow man, and God. She has a church dedicated to her in Deffynog, Brecknockshire. The name Callwen represents someone kind and Godly. There are some that doubt her existence but in a journal written in 1809 talks about the chapel Callwen that is dedicated to her. There are also other Brychan’s children that have gone into sainthood such as her sister Gwenfly and
Cynog.
