The meaning of Gwenddydd is ‘white flower day’.

History of the name Gwenddydd

Gwenddydd is the name of a legendary warrior princess. She was originally a mortal woman but became a goddess after her death. Her father was Lludd Llaw Eraint, and her mother was Penarddun, the sister of Brân the Blessed. According to legend, she fell in love with Gwyn ap Nudd, ruler of the Tylwyth Teg (the fairies), who abducted her and took her to his realm in Annwn (the Otherworld).

Merlin came to Gwenddydd as she was grieving for her lost love Gwyn ap Nudd. He offered to help her by calling him back from the dead for one day a year. But Gwenddydd does not want him to return because it would mean his death, so Merlin turns him into an immortal instead. On May Day, he returns to the mortal world to spend a night with her in the palace of Caer Feddwid (Cardiff Castle).
